Photoshop Tutorial: Avatar War Paint

Tutorial Speech:

First things first, you will need a picture to edit, in this case, we're using Rihanna.
Click on the new layer button to create a new layer. You can name is whatever you like, but to make it easier we named it “stripes”.
Go on Google and find a picture with a stripe pattern and right click on the picture and click copy, then go back to photoshop, make sure the stripes layer is highlighted, click the edit tab, and click paste.
The picture of the stripes should pop up in front of Rihanna.
Right click the quick selection tool, and select the magic wand tool.
Use the wand tool to highlight any part of the stripe picture that isn't black.
Once you've selected the background click delete.
Continue to erase any leftover white parts with the magic wand tool, or the eraser tool, play around with both tools to see which ones you prefer, but to get rid of smaller portions, its suggested that you use the eraser tool.
Now that all the white has been erased, we can apply the stripes to the face.
First thing you need to do is select the stripes layer, and click add add layer mask, where there should be 2 pictures in the layer selection.
Next, make sure you switch to the black foreground colour.
Go to the window tab, and select brushes.
Click on of the circular brushes with a faded edge.
Change the opacity to around 60-65%.
Click the layer mask on the stripes layer, which would be the white box, and start clicking on the face.
You can click once to erase a little bit of the stripes.
You'll notice the stripes start to fade.
Clicking the stripes rapidly will erase most of it.
Make sure you erase the stripes around the eyes, nose, and mouth.
Change the opacity to 100% for faster results.
Now for the sparkles.
create a new layer under your background layer, and name it sparkles.
Select the gradient tool, which can be found by right clicking the paint bucket tool.
Select diamond, and change the type of gradient to colour – transparent.
Select a light blue colour for the colour layer of the sparkles.
Click and drag the tool, and a sparkle should start to appear, drag the cursor away from the sparkle to make it bigger, and closer to make it smaller.
Once you've created the blue sparkles, create smaller white ones that will fit in the middle of the blue ones.
Each sparkle should have its own layer.
Merge the each white sparkle together with it's blue sparkle, this will make it easier to move them around.
Once you've finished making all the sparkles you would like, place them where you would like.
After completing these steps, you should have successfully created war paint for your avatar.
